Battery Chargers & Batteries

The demand for a good battery supply in cameras was not much of an issue until the advent of the digital camera. Unlike film cameras, digital cameras have a reputation for devouring battery power at a frustrating rate. Ever since the digital camera industry took off, efficient battery power for digital cameras have been highly sought after.

Camera Batteries

The high-tech electronics involved in even the most basic of digital cameras often have a way of sucking a set of AA batteries dry in hours. Since many digital cameras make use of LCD screens and other advanced technology, the lifespan of the average battery in a digital camera can be quite short indeed. The general trend towards more advanced and more compact digital camera designs has meant that digital cameras put increasingly greater strains on their battery supply, which must be small enough to fit into pocket-size cameras while still be able to support brief spurts of very high energy use.

Ultra-premium alkaline batteries and lithium batteries fare a little better, but not always by very much for the extra cost. Nickel metal hydride batteries have become a popular surrogate for regular AA alkaline batteries, but they also present the problem of discharging when dormant. Therefore rechargeable batteries have become a very popular power source for digital cameras, although they are generally less powerful than regular batteries at the onset and demand frequent charging.

Consumer demand for lasting, reliable digital camera batteries has gotten to the point where some companies make batteries specifically designed for use in digital cameras, replete with specialized chargers. This has led to another battery industry that is confined to camera manufacturers themselves and is separate from the more common market where one simply buys batteries in any store. This second battery market mostly concerns high-end digital cameras that compete even with professional film cameras for picture quality and therefore need quality power sources to perform. These specialized batteries are usually lithium-ion batteries, which are known as among the most efficient battery types for the ample energy they provide and how long they can last. A relatively small lithium-ion battery can still produce a generous amount of energy, which is ideal for accommodating the compact size of trendier digital cameras. Lithium-ion batteries do have the drawback of not keeping well over a long enough period of time even if they haven’t been used – in other words, they age regardless of whether they are used or not.
