Battery Packs

Battery packs in the camera industry are largely made for use in high-end digital cameras. They are usually lithium-ion batteries, and fetch a much heftier price than your run of the mill battery. But given that digital cameras are already notorious for guzzling ordinary batteries, specialized battery packs often save money in the long run. Digital cameras provide one of the largest markets for the use of battery packs, alongside camcorders and laptop computers.

One particular feature of battery packs is that their casing is often easier to dismantle than that of a single battery unit, an aspect that can be a double-edged sword. It can be useful for people who know what they’re doing with batteries and want to make their own customized adjustments, but there are also dangers involved for people who tinker incorrectly with lithium-ion batteries, which is what many battery packs for digital cameras are. They contain many volatile components that can result in fire hazards or worse if messed with improperly.

To seek a battery pack for a digital camera, it is advisable to look for ones made by the same company that made the camera in question, assuming said camera is capable of using a battery pack. Most camera companies produce specialized battery packs for their upscale digital camera lines.

For professional photographers, sufficiently long-lasting battery power is an issue that is compounded by professional camera flash guns, which, like digital cameras themselves, can use up numerous high jolts of energy at a time. Therefore some battery manufacturers have also made battery packs that can accommodate flash guns as well.

The battery pack market has been a very proprietary domain for companies competing in the camera industry. Every camera company produces battery packs that are designed to only be compatible with their own products, which is intended to promote brand loyalty. In addition, some enterprising companies that are not camera conglomerates themselves have nevertheless taken it upon themselves to try and design all-purpose, high-quality lithium-ion battery packs for digital cameras.

For cheaper digital cameras, battery packs are often not usable in their original form as cheaper digital cameras have battery compartments designed to take individual, common batteries. Thus, in order to use them in cheaper cameras, one must break up a battery pack, if the battery type is at all compatible with the camera in the first place.
