In recent times, the mechanical nature of the cable release is made largely obsolete by the camera remote control. This is because the camera remote control is essentially a cordless device, and therefore greatly improves upon the range of the cable release, whose range was restricted by the length of its little cable, which is rarely more than a few feet long.
