Camera Straps

The camera strap is a very versatile aid when it comes to basic camera transportation. With the use of a simple band of fabric, one is able to have a camera hang from his neck or arms. This is quite useful when one wants to have free hands and yet still have the camera handy for a quick draw shot. The more deluxe versions of the camera strap make use of a buckle to allow for subtle adjustments in the slack of the strap.

Some particularly fancy straps contain little compartments along its length that can be used to hold film canisters, much like a commando’s belt of bullets. But most straps eschew such trappings, and stick to the basic format of the strap that hangs across the torso.

Being a somewhat auxiliary component of the camera as a tool, the camera strap is often a popular place for the fanciful photographer to decorate his equipment. Much like guitar straps, camera straps can be adorned with all manner of personalized insignia and slogans. Some such decorations can include flag colors, yin yang symbols, intricate patterns, tessellations, and religious quotes, to name but a few.

Camera Wrist Straps

The camera strap is most often made from some kind of man-made fabric, such as nylon or polyester. Some more deluxe versions of the camera strap, however, are made from more prestigious or otherwise expensive materials such as leather, silk, or gold plated chain. Some less deluxe versions of the camera strap may be made of particularly lesser quality materials, such as cardboard, duct tape, or rope. In this way, the humble camera strap can be a somewhat versatile means of expression for the aspiring photographer.

The camera strap is one of the oldest accessories ever used for the portable camera, and is believed to predate both the camera bag and the camera case.

With the trend towards smaller and smaller cameras – at least as far as digital cameras go – the strap has also been miniaturized so that it can merely hang from the wrist. This has been an enduring use of the camera strap in the history of digital camera use. However, it has run afoul of being inherently less secure than the original torso-based design of the conventional camera strap.

The camera strap may not be the only means of carrying a camera, but it certainly is the most versatile. When worn across the chest, it is a valuable safeguard against cutpurses. It can even double as a strap for a camera case when the camera involved is inside said camera case.
