Large Format Cameras

For many people a basic, point and shoot type of camera is good enough. These kinds of cameras make photography about as easy as it can get. Usually, point and shoot cameras, which are also sometimes called SLR cameras, have an autofocus function, so all you have to do is look through your viewfinder, line up the photo, and go. There are limitations to this format, however. They are great for up close shots and medium distance shots, but they do not do so well when you want to take in a large shot of someplace, like a sweeping nature scene. For pictures like these, SLR cameras can be overly blurry and unable to offer enough magnification power to really capture everything you want in your picture. This is where large format cameras come in. With a large format camera, you have the ability to landscape shots and wide angle shots that are crisp, clear and perfectly contrasted. For many reasons, however, these cameras are not for the novice photographers. Large format cameras are more designed for the professional photographer or the hobbyist photographer.

What Are Large Format Cameras?

Maybe in movies you have seen the old fashioned cameras on a tripod that have a black sheet under which the photographer stands to take the photo. These cameras are large format cameras. While new large format cameras are much more advanced than these models, they still rest on a tripod, and they black sheet, technically called the dark cloth, are still in place. Photographers turn to these kinds of cameras for a number of reasons. First, of course, is the ability to take large image photos. Photographers also love the fact that these cameras let them have more control over how the camera moves and that they can use the individual sheets of film for each photo.

There are a few different sizes of large format camera you can get. The most popular ones are the ultra large format camera, the 8x10 large format camera and the 4x5 large format camera. Not every camera manufacturer has a line of large format cameras, but one of the leading choices is the Philips large format camera.

If you want to buy a large format camera, be aware that they can be pretty pricey. Used large format cameras can be found online if price is a major concern for you. You can also buy large format cameras in most specialty camera shops. If you’re new to this type of camera, getting advice from a photography professional is a good idea so you get exactly what you need.
